Determination of Atom-Surface van der Waals Potentials from Transmission-Grating Diffraction Intensities

چکیده
Molecular beams of rare gas atoms and D2 have been diffracted from 100 nm period SiNx transmission gratings. The relative intensities of the diffraction peaks out to the 8th order depend on the diffracting particle and are interpreted in terms of effective slit widths. These differences have been analyzed by a new theory which accounts for the long-range van der Waals −C3/l interaction of the particles with the walls of the grating bars. The values of the C3 constant for two different gratings are in good agreement and the results exhibit the expected linear dependence on the dipole polarizability.

Using Atomic Diffraction of Na from Material Gratings to Measure Atom-Surface Interactions
In atom optics a material structure is commonly regarded as an amplitude mask for atom waves. However, atomic diffraction patterns formed using material gratings indicate that material structures also operate as phase masks. In this study a well collimated beam of sodium atoms is used to illuminate a silicon nitride grating with a period of 100 nm. During passage through the grating slots atoms...
متن کاملQuantum reflection of helium atom beams from a microstructured grating
We observe high-resolution diffraction patterns of a thermal-energy helium-atom beam reflected from a microstructured surface grating at grazing incidence. The grating consists of 10-μm-wide Cr strips patterned on a quartz substrate and has a periodicity of 20 μm. Fully-resolved diffraction peaks up to the 7 order are observed at grazing angles up to 20 mrad. With changes in de Broglie waveleng...
متن کاملPhasor analysis of atom diffraction from a rotated material grating
An atom-surface interaction was detected by studying atom diffraction from a rotated material grating. A phasor diagram similar to the Cornu spiral was developed to explain why there are no missing orders in atom diffraction from material gratings. We also show that atom-surface interactions combined with rotated grating structures can produce asymmetric, i.e., blazed, diffraction patterns. Our...

Atom-surface interactions can significantly modify the intensity and phase of atom de Broglie waves diffracted by a silicon nitride grating. This affects the operation of a material grating as a coherent beam splitter. The phase shift induced by diffraction is measured by comparing the relative phases of serveral interfering paths in a Mach-Zehnder Na atom interferometer formed by three materia...
متن کاملDetermination of the Second Virial Coefficient for Binary Mixtures of Ar with CH4 and CO using Van der Waals and Dieterici Models
In this paper, we calculate the second virial coefficient for binary mixtures of Ar with CH4 and CO in order to evaluate the performance of equations of state (EOSs). The investigated EOSs are van der Waals (vdW), Redlich-Kwong (RK), Peng-Robinson (PR), Carnahan-Starling–van der Waals (CS-vdW) and Guggenheim-van der Waals (G-vdW) based on van der Waals model. In our work, we also use Dieterici ...
